Mr. Chaplin gets his wings...

It’s hard to lose a scottie. Especially when it happens suddenly, very suddenly. Our hearts were broken when Shelby and Doug’s gentle giant Mr. Chaplin got his wings this past week. Although he had sinus problems as long as I can remember, his health never seemed to be an issue. He was a big ol scottie at around 35 lbs. but he wasn’t fat. Like most rescues Mr. Chaplin had a hard start in life, but that was quickly put to the back foot where he kicked dirt on it and moved on. Mr. Chaplin struck the scottie lottery with Shelby and Doug where he became the overseer of the manor so to speak. You wouldn’t think a big scottie could move very fast but when it came to squirrels, snacks or a threat Mr. Chaplin was quick as lightning. When it came to a couch… not so much.

Mr. Chaplin learned critical skills from Ms. Maddie (Queen of Cliff Mill) and was in the process of becoming King (Mr. Donovan had held that position for years)… Of course, the Court Jester Mr. Spencer and Princess Ms. Marley, were always by his side helping him to stay grounded. During his stay with us while Shelby and Doug had a hospital honeymoon (long story), he was large and in charge (with Ms. Maddie’s permission of course). Teresa just about didn’t let him go back home, but don’t tell Shelby that… One of his best traits was how he gave his love and support when Ms. Maddie went to be awarded her wings.

Now, the yard is down a scottie or two and seems so lonely. Mr. Spencer can only be so crazy and keep Shelby and Doug occupied. Ms. Marley is spending time being beautiful with special effort to make it look easy.

We will miss Mr. Chaplin but we know he is patrolling Heaven’s yard with Mr. Higgins, Ms. Maddie, Mr. Donovan, Mr. Pierre and Mr. George… AAAarrrRRROOooo from our crew…

UPDATE: Wally got his FURever home!

Here is your next best buddy, and his name is Wally. He's only around 5 years old and in great health. Ok, he needs to drop a few pounds because his previous humans feed him cheeseburgers and table food. If you are looking for a belly to scratch, head to rub and a few tips on how to sleep at an owner's feet while watching TV, then you are in luck. Wally possesses all the typical Scottie skills, such as making treats disappear and keeping an eye on cats. He most likely shouldn't be around them and needs a fenced in yard to run some of those pounds off. Consider Wally and his big brown eyes as your next luv bug and you won't be disappointed. Go to www.scottierescue.com and fill out an application... Wally is waiting!

UPDATE: 14 years and one day later, we lost the Queen... Happy BARKday Ms. Maddie! 13 Years Young...

Ms. Maddie is 13 years young! Whether you know it or not, this is the Queen Bee of our Scottie Clan in Chattanooga. Her humans, Shelby and Doug, have been given the privilege of serving her for quite a while. Ms. Maddie goes through each day holding up the standards of a scottie as no other can. Her ability to let the common person gaze upon her in awe, yet then turn her back with complete disregard is unmatched. The 'most interesting man in the world' couldn't stand a chance with this regal queen. She may be small in stature, but she is a giant in the field of scotties. When you look in the dictionary under the term 'attitude', you'll only see a photo of Ms. Maddie.

Not a fan of camping, Ms. Maddie will suffer a trip or two a year just to let the average person get a glimpse of her greatness. She only lets her closest humans interact on a semi-personal level with her. Most often, humans tend to bore her with their stares, gazing and photos. A beautiful girl with such presence... and most of the time, you'll only get a look at her back. Ms. Maddie will turn her back on those who just don't understand their place in life when compared to her. It isn't a mean thing, its just the way it is...

Because of Ms. Maddie (and her buddy Big 'D' Donovan), we have the crew we do. She has been instrumental in giving so many scotties a second shot in life (although she won't discuss her part due to her ability to control her pride).

So, Happy BARKday to Ms. Maddie! May you reign FURever! AAarrrrRRrrrooOOoooo!

Bella and her puppies...

After a rough few months on her own, Bella is happy with her puppies. It seems her human died, and the folks who were given care of her didn't want her. So, they tossed her out to live on her own. It appears she fell in with a NON-Scottie and well, the rest is history. Tennessee Scottie Rescue went to central KY and worked with a cat rescue group to catch her. While at the groomer... SURPRISE! She went into labor... 4 puppies and several hundred miles later, she is getting the care she needs. Get ready to give a puppy its new FURever home and then, Ms. Bella will be good to go also.

Duke is in the house....

Duke is in the house! This little 3 year old guy had a family member who could not look after him the way he needed due to illness on their part, so they turned to www.scottierescue.com to find him a FURever home! Not sure how long he'll be with us, but you can check out others while visiting the scottie rescue page!

RIP Donovan

Very few men got to be friends with Donovan. He was particular in who he thought was of enough character to approach him. Those who could were treated to a 100% loving acceptance type attitude. Those who couldn't... need not apply. I was one of the lucky ones, as a matter of fact, I was one of maybe four men who he shared his world with. Women were usually a different matter. He was a ladies scot that relished his lovins' from the female world.

Now when it came to 'scottitude', Donovan had his share. Often times he would let you know he was paying attention to what you were doing by ignoring you. Not like Ms. Maddie though. Oh, he would take a quick peek back towards your direction as you begged for attention, but then he would do the 1,000 yard stare. He knew you were there, ready to scratch and love, but he also knew you needed to wait, just a few moments longer.

Donovan showed his LOVE for his human momma Shelby by using her as a seat cushion lots of times. Most often we got to see that when we were on our camping trips. I guess you can see a lot more from a higher vantage point (especially one that would keep scratching and petting as long as you sit there). From there, squirrels were simply low hanging fruit to Donovan. As a captain peering from the wheelhouse, he would sit on Shelby's lap or on the back deck and scan the horizon for the enemy. I'm pretty sure he never got Christmas cards from the backyard squirrels, nor love letters either.

Donovan was siblings with 'big sis' Maddie, and was 'big bro' to our Maggie. His squirrel hunting buddy Marley was his first in command and his backup was Chaplin. Those three scotties were responsible for the rescue of a ton of other scotties so you might say, he was a big brother to a huge extended clan.

He was a linebacker type scottie but moved like a lightning flash. He was the picture of what a male scottie could be, even should be. Big broad back, piercing dark brown eyes and a chest just made for rubbing. He never was a complainer, never a whiner, always ready for more... and he had cancer. You can't imagine the shock of finding out that he wasn't healthy. He was not healthy at all. As I said, he never complained, never made out that he wasn't well, he just went through life like it would never end. Unfortunately, the cancer was too much and time was too little. Even though you get almost 12 years, you always want 12 more, at least...

Everything possible was done to help him. Trips to UT School of Veterinarian Medicine, trips to several local vets, prayer chains, treatment options... everything anyone with a scottie would try. He even had got a custom-made catheter bag which he carried by means of his harness. He was styling, profiling and thought he was too cool. The hard part was letting him go. Donovan loved his Shelby and Doug, loved his other scotties that he spent his days in the backyard with and loved his entire extended scottie clan.

He is better now, rested up and ready for those pesky squirrels that made it to heaven I'm sure. His cancer a long gone memory, his pain and suffering no more. I also have no doubt he's found a lap or two from which to wait and watch for his human mamma Shelby.

So long Big D, leave Heaven's doggie door open... we miss you!

Signed... the aaaAAARRRrrooOOOoo Crew

Two new scotties... woo hoo

This little girl is Scottie Ann. She is a 4-5 year old female who was an owner turn-in. Scottie Ann is a small or petite frame scottie but she has a big ol' heart!

And this big boy is... Scottie Boy. He is about 13 months old and has more energy than 3 scotties combined. He is a sweetie pie and seems to love everyone.

Just to let you know, on June 4 King George pasted over the Rainbow Bridge. We were able to take him to Myrtle Beach that week where on that Monday his little heart gave out. We will miss King George...

Louie...

We have had Louie visit for the past few weeks and he's really been fun. There is a chance he may already have a home... we'll see...

Order up!

Here is Ms. Mattie sitting at the table ready to order. Ms. Mattie was one of the most beautiful rescues to come through www.scottierescue.com in my opinion and by the way she orders breakfast, could be the most spoiled EVER... The younger Ms. Whitt took this picture and did a great job capturing that 'Scottie' spirit to a tee. We can't wait to see Ms. Mattie and her humans at the picnic in May!

Who would want an old dog…

That became apparent when I got a call from the Washington County Animal Shelter. Someone must have gotten tired of their 14 year old Scottie and decided they would just turn him out into the street while they went to Florida for the winter.

When I arrived, I found a stately Scottish Terrier who was ready to leave, ready to head home as it were. However, we had to wait an agonizing 5 more days to give his previous human time to reclaim him. On a Wednesday at 12:01, we took over. For the next year the last thing Pierre had to worry about was his spot on the couch. He became very good at camping whether we were in Gatlinburg, Chattanooga or Myrtle Beach. He loved the trips to the cabin or a run on the beach equally well. He became a true connoisseur of ‘taters and onions, (yes, I am aware about ONIONS - it is just our term for grilling out), table food, heck, whatever ‘you’ are having was just fine with him. Popcorn never touched the ground at our house nor did potato chips have a chance. His cataracts were so bad he couldn’t always see what was going on, but his nose told him where the treats were.

Pierre’s gruff voice was reminiscent of Sam Elliott or an old gunfighter… his belly was made for rubbing though. Teresa and Pierre would get into sneezing bouts with each other and Pierre always won. The spot on the couch was his from the start. From there he could see the TV, be perfectly in line for someone walking by with food and it was a good napping location. He might have been an old dog, but he was smart one and… he had a puppy’s heart.

His body though, was giving out, faster than it should in my selfish opinion. He needed more time with the other Scotties in our clan, more trips to the Tennessee River, more time for everything… but that wasn’t going to happen. Pierre’s kidneys started shutting down with enzyme levels off the chart. He wouldn’t eat and finally wouldn’t drink. His breathing was getting too much for him to handle and so, we reluctantly made the trip to help him over the Rainbow Bridge.

Who would want an old dog? I can tell you at least 6 people who knew Pierre that would take you to task for that kind of thought. You see, most folk forget that when they have seen an old dog… it has a puppy’s heart. Just look at Pierre… and then go to Tennessee Scottie Rescue and see what old dogs you can find. Ginger McAfee will go the extra mile and then some to make sure you find your next best buddy.

So Pierre, play in peace, achoo from Teresa and aaAAARRrrrroOOO from the rest of your Scottie Clan.
